Makati Mayor Abby Binay Addresses Speculation of Taguig Mayoral Run: ‘Its an Option’

Makati City, Philippines – Makati Mayor Abby Binay has finally opened up about the rumors swirling around her potential mayoral bid in Taguig for the upcoming local elections. The buzz had been ripe with theories that this move was her way of getting back at the Cayetanos, who currently hold sway over Taguig.

In a candid ambush interview, Binay coyly admitted, “That is an option. Pero hindi pa po ako nakakapag-desisyon dahil magiging mabigat at mahirap na task ang tumakbo sa Taguig pagkat una, hindi po ako familiar sa lugar.”

The plea from netizens residing in the affected 10 barangays, comprising over 320,000 residents, has grown stronger by the day, urging Abby or any member of the Binay family to step up and lead Taguig.

The seismic decision by the Supreme Court regarding a land dispute case, transferring these 10 Makati barangays, shook the city’s second district—a stronghold of Representative Luis Campos, the husband of Mayor Abby Binay.

In classic political fashion, Abby Binay dropped hints about her vision for Taguig if she were to secure the mayoral seat. “Although marami po tayong maibibigay at magagawa para sa lungsod na ‘yon. Pero kelangan pong magmumuni-muni nang mabuti.”

However, she emphasized that her decision would not be a solitary one. “Kaylangang kausapin ko po ‘yong asawa’t anak ko because it will be a difficult decision to make running for Taguig” (I need to talk to my husband and my children because it will be a difficult decision to run for Taguig), she said.

The interview took an emotional turn as she spoke about her constituents, whom she holds dear to her heart. “As much as possible kasi ayaw ko munang bumababa, kasi I get really emotional. Kasi sa totoo lang hindi ko alam kung paano ko haharapin ‘yong mga Makatizens kasi I feel na parang I let them down” (As much as possible, I don’t want to step down for now because I get really emotional. Honestly, I don’t know how to face the Makatizens because I feel like I let them down).

She went on to assure the public that the support she receives is genuine and not fabricated. “Hindi po ‘to stage, hindi po ‘to fake. Kita niyo po ‘yong damdamin ng lahat ng tao dito. Hindi po sila bayaran para kumita dito. Hindi po sila hinakot. Sila po ay taga-dito, taga-EMBO po sila, may mga anak na nag-aaral po dito” (This is not staged, this is not fake. You can see the emotions of everyone here. They were not paid to be here. They were not brought here. They are from here, they are from EMBO, and they have children studying here).

Mayor Binay concluded her emotional exchange with her constituents by affirming her dedication to fighting for the people of Makati.

In related news, residents of the embattled EMBO barangays in Makati took to the streets last August 20 in a massive motorcade, shouting a resounding “No to Taguig, Makati pa rin!” (No to Taguig, Makati still!).

Their message was loud and clear: they remain unwavering Makatizens, despite a controversial Supreme Court ruling affirming Taguig’s jurisdiction over the ten EMBO barangays. The turnout was nothing short of impressive, with an estimated hundreds, if not thousands, of riders participating to reaffirm their Makati identity.
