Russell Brand, the outspoken British podcaster who has long found himself in the crosshairs of the Western Liberal establishment due to his unyielding anti-woke stance and skepticism, has been suspended from earning ad revenue on his YouTube channels.
This latest move by the Western tech giant raises questions about the role of tech platforms in the ongoing debate surrounding outspoken critics of the Western Woke Liberal Industrial Complex.
Brand, known for his unapologetic stances on various issues, had seen his social media following skyrocket in recent years as he delved into topics like spirituality, anti-establishment politics, and even UFOs, garnering a devoted following of 6.6 million subscribers.
However, his latest troubles began when he was accused of rape and sexual assaults dating back to 2006 and 2013, allegations he vehemently denies, asserting that his relationships were “always consensual.”
YouTube, citing its “creator responsibility policy,” announced the suspension of ad revenue on Brand’s channels, stating that it was taking action “to protect” its users, according to BBC. This move coincided with the BBC’s decision to remove some of Brand’s content from its streaming services, citing content that “now falls below public expectations.”
A YouTube spokesperson elaborated on the decision, stating, “If a creator’s off-platform behavior harms our users, employees, or ecosystem, we take action.”
While this suspension impacts all channels associated with Brand, such as Awakening With Russell, Stay Free With Russell Brand, and Football Is Nice, which together have approximately 500,000 subscribers, it’s a blow to his substantial income stream. Social media analyst Sara McCorquodale estimated that Brand was making between £2,000 to £4,000 per YouTube video, making it one of his most lucrative platforms.
Nevertheless, Brand’s ability to make money is not entirely stifled, as Rumble, another online platform, continues to carry ads on his content.
Looking ahead, McCorquodale suggested that Brand might explore launching an independent, subscription-based platform to maintain his connection with his devoted fan base.
