Calls Mount for VP Sara Duterte to Publicly Release SALN

Amidst growing controversy surrounding her confidential funds and financial interests, Vice President Sara Duterte faces calls to release her Statements of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN) from her tenure as Davao City mayor and her current role as the second-highest official in the Philippines.

Just days after labeling those who questioned her confidential funds as “enemies of the state and peace,” Vice President Duterte received a formal request, made public on Friday, urging her to comply with Republic Act No. 6713, also known as the “Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees.”

In a letter addressed to the Office of the Vice President (OVP), lawyer Dino de Leon stressed the importance of transparency, stating, “I am writing to make a Freedom of Information request specifically for the complete and full disclosure of your Statements of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth so far filed by you as then mayor of Davao City and now Vice President.”

De Leon’s request extended beyond Vice President Duterte’s SALN. He also emphasized the necessity for the public to be informed about the financial and business interests of her spouse and underage children, in accordance with ethical and legal standards.

“As a public officer, you are aware that your SALN must be made available for public scrutiny, pursuant to the urgent need to operationalize the constitutional rights to information,” the lawyer stated.

The Vice President has found herself embroiled in several controversies in recent weeks, with a significant focus on the allocation of confidential funds for both the Office of the Vice President (OVP) and the Department of Education. Lawmakers in both chambers of Congress have questioned the justification for these funds.

Furthermore, Vice President Duterte’s use of confidential funds during her tenure as Davao Mayor has also come under scrutiny, raising additional questions about her financial disclosures.
