Tech mogul Elon Musk, known for his bold stance on free speech, is making good on his promise to support users facing repercussions for their statements on his social media platform, X.
In his latest tweet, Musk declared, “We will do whatever it takes to support your right to free speech!”
This comes in response to the defense of a University of Illinois student, Juan David Campolargo, who is facing disciplinary proceedings for his X posts.
Musk’s tweet was accompanied by a post from the verified account X News Daily, reporting X’s legal intervention to safeguard the free speech rights of the embattled Illinois student.
“This is the first known example so far of X paying legal fees to support users’ free speech, as promised in August,” highlighted X News Daily.
The news quickly gained traction, with Musk’s post amassing over 50,000 likes and 10,000 retweets within just one hour.
The Financial Times obtained a letter revealing that Campolargo is accused of violating the University of Illinois’ student code of conduct for misleadingly promoting a closed conference as an open gathering with free food.
The potential consequences include conduct probation and eviction from campus housing.
Schaerr Jaffe, the legal representation claiming to act “with the support of X Corp,” wrote a letter urging the university to reverse its preliminary findings, emphasizing that failure to do so would violate Campolargo’s rights.
The letter warned of a potential violation of his First Amendment rights if the university proceeds with disciplinary action based on his X posts from September 30, 2023.
Elon Musk, a self-proclaimed “free speech absolutist,” pledged in August to fund legal bills and file lawsuits on behalf of X users who believe they have been treated unfairly due to their platform activities.
Despite his commitment to controlling X’s costs, Musk asserted, “No limit,” promising a vigorous legal response that extends to the boards of directors of relevant companies.
Musk’s ownership of X for just over a year has seen a shift in moderation policies, with a focus on loosening restrictions, earning both applause from followers and criticism from advertisers concerned about their content appearing alongside controversial material.
Despite some controversies, Musk remains steadfast in his commitment to promoting free speech.
Critics have pointed out Musk’s occasional dismissal of X staffers who criticize him.
The recent legal intervention on behalf of Campolargo marks a significant step in Musk’s campaign for free expression on the platform.
The University of Illinois responded to the allegations, stating it was not familiar with the letter or the specific case due to confidentiality constraints.
Jaffe confirmed sending the letter earlier in the week, providing assistance with support from X but refrained from further comment.
Campolargo, an engineering student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is recognized for his TedX talks and has self-published a book on lithium, as per his website.
Musk’s commitment to defending free speech on X continues to make waves, leaving a lasting impact on the platform’s user community.
