In a somber announcement on Saturday, December 23, 2023, the official Facebook page of PBA legend Samboy Lim revealed that the iconic basketball figure had succumbed to a prolonged medical battle at the age of 61.
The statement conveyed the heartbreaking news, stating, “Our hearts are broken. Today, December 23, 2023, our dearly beloved Samboy passed away peacefully.”
During his final moments at the Medical City, Father Franklin Beltran, a former Letran Chaplain, administered the Last Rites Extreme Unction.
Describing Lim as a “man of Faith, exceptional courage, humility, and grace,” the statement also acknowledged the individuals who were by his side during his last moments, including family members, friends, and former teammates.
Lim’s family expressed gratitude to the medical professionals and caregivers who provided care throughout his health journey.
Known as “The Skywalker,” Lim began his illustrious basketball career with Letran in 1982, winning three championships and earning an MVP award.

His contributions extended to the national team, securing gold in the 1983 Singapore and 1985 Bangkok Southeast Asian Games, as well as the 1985 FIBA Asia Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Joining the San Miguel Beermen in 1986, he spent his entire 11-year professional career with the team, accumulating numerous accolades, including nine PBA championships and a Grand Slam title in 1989.

His contributions earned him a place in the PBA Hall of Fame in 2009, with the San Miguel Beermen retiring his jersey No. 9.
Lim’s health took a downturn in November 2014 when he collapsed after a PBA Legends exhibition game.

Despite slipping into a coma, he showed resilience, emerging from it in January 2015. Throughout his recovery, Lim received round-the-clock treatment and therapy.
Last September, Team USA deputy coach Chip Engelland visited Lim, showcasing the enduring camaraderie among former teammates.

In April, marking over eight years since Lim’s cardiac arrest during an exhibition game, family and friends gathered to celebrate his life with a Holy Mass in Wack Wack.
Despite being wheelchair-bound and unable to speak or see, Lim’s loved ones remain hopeful for his recovery. Lim’s daughter Jamie, a gold medalist in women’s kumite at the 2019 SEA Games, couldn’t attend the gathering but continues to stay connected.

While Lim’s physical condition remains challenging, signs of recognition during visits from PBA Legends provide a glimmer of hope.
Lim’s legacy extends beyond the basketball court, with the passage of the Samboy Lim Law in 2016 requiring CPR lessons at the high school level nationwide. Despite budget considerations for implementation, Lim’s impact on Philippine sports and health education endures.
