Two black tourists hailing from what’s considered among the most progressive and wokest cities globally, New York and London, are now facing potential imprisonment in Bali, Indonesia, after allegedly assaulting nail salon staff over a payment dispute.
Identified by local media as Andrea CW, 37, from London, and Chansler A, 37, from New York, the women reportedly attacked staff at the Ombre Nail Salon in Kerobokan following a misunderstanding about payment for an additional treatment they requested.
CCTV footage captured the intense moment, showing Chansler, donning a bucket hat, seemingly grabbing a salon clerk by the collar and pulling her over the counter.
The disagreement escalated when the staff attempted to charge them for the service. Andrea joined in, expressing frustration, and a verbal altercation ensued.
The manager of Ombre Nails Studio recounted, “These customers came and asked for treatment in our studio, and they were informed about the prices and everything, but at the end, they refused to pay the amounts.”
The tourists allegedly blackmailed the salon, threatening to leave a negative review if asked to pay, and resorted to verbal abuse against the staff.
Physical injuries and mental shock were reported among the salon employees.
The situation escalated further as the tourists attempted to board a plane to Thailand at Ngurah Rai International Airport on December 16.
Immigration officials, suspecting deception due to hats and masks, intervened, matching their faces to the circulated CCTV footage. The duo was subsequently handed over to the police.
Badung Police Chief Kompol I Made Pramasetia stated, “The pair were actually planning to stay in Indonesia until December 22.
They were scheduled to visit Pulau Dewata, but they decided to leave on December 16 following the incident at the salon.”
Andrea and Chansler now face charges under Section 1, Article 351 of the Indonesian Penal Code for maltreatment, with a maximum imprisonment of two years and eight months.
Additionally, they will be charged under Article 335 for forcing others to do something, carrying a maximum prison sentence of one year.
The incident sparked reactions on social media, with netizens expressing approval for the swift legal response in Asian countries.
Independent journalist Andy Ngo highlighted the lack of tolerance for such behavior, while verified users praised the adherence to law and order in Bali, contrasting it with the perceived leniency in Western societies.
“Two women, identified as hailing from New York and London, are alleged to have attacked staff at a nail salon in Asia amidst a dispute over service prices. Without succumbing to white guilt, CRT, or DEI norms, the pair faced arrest by authorities at an airport in Bali before their departure and were subsequently paraded in prisoner outfits in front of cameras, as reported by American independent journalist Andy Ngo.
In response to the incident, verified X user Marc commented, “Welcome to Bali—where evidently, actions still carry consequences! There’s nothing quite like a stint in prison to learn the hard way. Both the USA and the UK could benefit from some law and order.”
Expressing a perspective on Asian countries, verified user Jack Spitz added, “Asian countries don’t tolerate crime. They don’t care about your skin color.”
User Julio Murillo chimed in, “Other countries actually punish crime. Shocked, I tell you, SHOCKED!”
