Secretary Eduardo M. Año, the National Security Adviser of the Philippines, has delivered a strong rebuttal to the recent claims made by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
He staunchly defended the joint maritime exercises carried out by the Philippines and the United States in the West Philippine Sea.
Addressing the Chinese accusations of ‘provocative military activities’ as “irresponsible,” Secretary Año reiterated that these cooperative activities were conducted well within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and in accordance with international law, notably the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
“How can exercises within our own territory, consistent with international law, be deemed provocative?” questioned Año, underlining the Philippines’ right to engage in activities aimed at bolstering maritime capabilities and strengthening cooperation with the US, a treaty partner, for regional security.
Asserting the significance of these joint patrols, Año emphasized their role in fortifying the readiness of both countries’ armed forces to address emerging security challenges.
“Our partnership underscores a commitment to a rules-based international order, promoting peace, and ensuring regional stability,” he added.
Highlighting the nation’s strides in defense capabilities, Año pointed out the development of a formidable navy and armed forces, vital in safeguarding territorial integrity and maritime rights in the West Philippine Sea.
Amidst the tension, Año conveyed the Philippines’ openness to diplomatic dialogue with China, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to nurturing amicable relations with all countries.
“Through peaceful discourse and adherence to international law, we seek a resolution that benefits all parties in the region,” he concluded.
The Philippines’ steadfast stance in exercising its sovereign rights while advocating for peace and adherence to international law serves as a strong counterpoint against the accusations leveled by China, signaling an unwavering commitment to defending its interests and promoting regional stability.
