In a high-profile legal battle, billionaire Elon Musk has thrown his weight behind fired “Mandalorian” actress Gina Carano, who alleged she was terminated by Disney-owned Lucasfilm due to her conservative political views.
Carano’s lawsuit, filed in a California federal court, accuses Disney of wrongful termination and discrimination based on her political beliefs.
The dispute stems from Carano’s outspoken social media presence, where she has voiced opinions on various topics, including mask mandates during the pandemic, claims of voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election, and comparisons between being a Republican and the persecution of Jews during the Holocaust. Her social media posts were maliciously misrepresented by various liberal media outlets and Democratic political pundits, including Lucasfilm, her former employer.
“Today is an important day for me–I am filing a lawsuit against @lucasfilm & @Disney,” Carano posted on X on Wednesday, February 7.
“Nothing could be further from the truth,” she asserted in response to Lucasfilm’s claim on Twitter that she made posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities.
“The truth is I was being hunted down from everything I posted to every post I liked because I was not in line with the acceptable narrative of the time. My words were consistently twisted to demonize & dehumanize me as an alt-right wing extremist. It was a bullying smear campaign aimed at silencing, destroying & making an example out of me.”
“The thing is I never even used aggressive language. I shared thought-provoking quotes, pictures, memes & occasionally I used my own words, not with aggression but with respect & the occasional comedy to keep the mood light in dark times,” she added.
Musk pledged to support Carano’s legal action against Disney, posting on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to expose what he called “mandatory, institutionalized racism and sexism” within the company.
“An anonymous source just sent me this from Disney. It is mandatory, institutionalized racism and sexism!” Musk posted, followed by a series of screenshots, adding, “But wait, there’s more!”
“No wonder most of their content produced over the past several years has sucked. Just trying to navigate the DEI minefield is going to crush the creative process!” Musk elaborated.
Musk’s support comes amidst his own feud with Disney CEO Bob Iger over alleged antisemitic content on Musk’s platform.
In late November last year, the billionaire directed blunt language toward Iger, telling him to “go f–k yourself”, and other executives who ceased advertising on X, expressing frustration amid accusations that the platform wasn’t adequately addressing antisemitic content.
Carano’s lawsuit alleges that she was targeted by an “online bully mob” for expressing her opinions and that her termination was unjustified.
She seeks damages for lost wages, emotional distress, and punitive damages, as well as a court order to be reinstated in her role as Cara Dune in “The Mandalorian.”
In response to the lawsuit, Disney and Lucasfilm have yet to file a formal response or comment on the allegations, according to media reports.
However, Carano’s lawsuit has reignited debates over free speech, corporate accountability, and the boundaries between personal beliefs and professional conduct in the entertainment industry.
