A dramatic showdown between law enforcement and a wanted Chinese man unfolded in the heart of Bonifacio Global City (BGC) in Taguig, leaving the suspect injured and in custody.
Zhao Yuzi, the subject of a manhunt for a series of alleged crimes, was apprehended by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG) along 31st Avenue on Monday night, according to Philippine Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) executive director Gilbert Cruz, PhilStar reported.
Cruz recounted the events, stating that officers were in the process of serving Zhao with warrants for various offenses when the suspect drew a handgun, triggering a confrontation.
“When the warrant of arrest was being served, the police immediately noticed he ran and he opened fire at the police,” explained Brig. Gen. Cosme Abrenica, director of the PNP Anti-Kidnapping Group,
In an attempt to flee, Zhao commandeered a sport utility vehicle, leading to an exchange of gunfire with pursuing officers. The pursuit ultimately ended at the corner of Zamora Circle and the BGC Bus Depot, where Zhao was apprehended.
The suspect sustained injuries and was promptly transported to a hospital for treatment. Authorities recovered two firearms and a grenade from Zhao upon his capture.
Further investigation revealed Zhao’s alleged involvement in the December 2023 abduction of a fellow Chinese national, leading to additional charges including kidnapping for ransom, PNA reported.
“The suspect would also face charges of attempted homicide and illegal possession of firearms,” Abrenica asserted.
As the investigation progresses, authorities are keen to ascertain how Zhao acquired the firearms and whether he possessed the requisite permits. Abrenica also emphasized the importance of delving into Zhao’s employment history and vehicle registration.
