Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri has finally authorized the issuance of an arrest warrant against Apollo Quiboloy, the founder of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC), following his failure to appear at Senate hearings investigating alleged abuses within his organization.
This action comes after Quiboloy’s explanations for his absence were dismissed as unsatisfactory by the senator leading the probe.
This development follows the recent alliance between the Duterte camp and Quiboloy’s congregation, culminating in prayer rallies that some have described as “puro murahan” rallies filled with verbal expletives.
With the Duterte camp’s collaboration with Quiboloy’s followers during these contentious prayer gatherings, the Marcos regime sees an opportune moment to assess its political standing.
Sen. Risa Hontiveros, chair of the Senate committee on women and gender equality, expressed dissatisfaction with Quiboloy’s justifications for his nonattendance at the hearings, particularly regarding allegations of sex crimes.
Zubiri emphasized that the decision to issue the arrest warrant was procedural, noting that Hontiveros found no merit in Quiboloy’s reasons for avoiding the hearings.
Hontiveros confirmed the release of the arrest order via social media, declaring, “Yes, the arrest order vs Quiboloy is out! Ang pambabastos niya sa Senado ay hindi dapat palampasin” (His disrespect towards the Senate should not be overlooked). She thanked witnesses who contributed to the investigation, emphasizing their crucial role in the process.
Quiboloy, represented by legal counsel Melanio Balayan, had presented legal arguments against his arrest, citing the perceived incriminatory nature of the investigation and asserting that it assumed his guilt.
However, Hontiveros clarified that the Senate inquiry was aimed at legislation concerning human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and money laundering.
Highlighting the Senate’s role, Hontiveros underscored that the panel sought Quiboloy’s arrest not for alleged crimes but for his refusal to attend hearings despite being summoned.
She clarified that the Senate does not possess judicial powers to determine guilt or innocence.
Zubiri echoed Hontiveros’s sentiments, emphasizing that the arrest warrant was not punitive but intended to reinforce the Senate’s authority to conduct inquiries effectively.
He explained that the issuance of the order aimed to compel Quiboloy’s appearance and cooperation, with the possibility of rescinding it if he complies.
The Senate sergeant-at-arms has been tasked with executing the arrest warrant, with the Philippine National Police offering assistance in ensuring security during the process.
Additionally, the House legislative franchises committee has also ordered Quiboloy’s arrest for his failure to attend hearings related to alleged franchise violations of Sonshine Media Network International (SMNI), associated with the pastor.
