Former Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio criticizes the alleged ‘gentleman’s deal’ between former president Rodrigo Duterte and China, denouncing it as ‘disadvantageous’ and asserting that it does not reflect formal country policy.
This comes in response to former Duterte spokesperson Harry Roque’s statement claiming that Duterte and China had agreed to maintain the status quo in the West Philippine Sea, with limited resupply missions to the Philippine outpost in Ayungin Shoal strictly for food and water, ruling out any reconstruction efforts.
Carpio lambasted individuals who echo China’s stance, labeling them as spokespersons for the Chinese government. He particularly singled out former Duterte administration spokesperson Harry Roque, accusing him of betraying the nation and serving as China’s mouthpiece.
Carpio further accused Duterte of exploiting fear tactics to appease Chinese leader Xi Jinping, stating, “He pleased Xi Jinping.”
Highlighting a contrasting approach, Carpio commended Malaysia and Indonesia for their resilience against Chinese intimidation, noting that they are prevailing in the dispute by refusing to yield to pressure tactics.
The remarks from Carpio underscore ongoing tensions surrounding the Philippines’ territorial disputes with China in the South China Sea.
Carpio’s critique adds to the debate over Duterte’s handling of maritime issues and raises questions about the long-term implications of diplomatic agreements made during his tenure.
