Argentine President Javier Milei and Philippine President Bongbong Marcos were among the first global leaders to issue strong condemnations immediately following the attempted assassination of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Moments after the news broke of the failed assassination attempt by an unidentified shooter, President Milei posted on X, formerly known as Twitter: “All my support and solidarity to President and candidate Donald Trump, victim of a COWARDLY assassination attempt that put his life and that of hundreds of people at risk.”
Milei further commented that the international left’s desperation is predictable, as it faces the demise of its harmful ideology and resorts to destabilizing democracies and inciting violence to gain power.
“In fear of losing at the polls, they resort to terrorism to impose their retrograde and authoritarian agenda,” Milei said.
He expressed hopes for President Trump’s quick recovery and emphasized the importance of fair, peaceful, and democratic elections in the United States.
President Marcos also took to X, expressing relief at Trump’s safety: “It is with great relief that we receive the news that former President Donald Trump is fine and well after the attempt to assassinate him. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.
“Together with all democracy-loving peoples around the world, we condemn all forms of political violence. The voice of the people must always remain supreme,” he added.
The attack, which occurred during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, left one attendee dead and another injured.
The shooter was killed by Secret Service agents. Many observers see the failed assassination attempt as potentially boosting Trump’s presidential campaign, with recent surveys showing him leading in the polls.
House Speaker Mike Johnson announced that the House will conduct a full investigation into the tragic events.
“The American people deserve to know the truth. We will have Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle and other appropriate officials from DHS and the FBI appear for a hearing before our committees ASAP,” Johnson posted on X.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump expressed condolences to the victims of the incident. He extended sympathy to the family of the deceased rally attendee and to the family of another individual who was seriously injured.
The former president remarked on the shocking nature of such an act occurring in the United States. He also noted that little information is currently known about the deceased shooter.
He also detailed his experience of being struck by a bullet that grazed the upper part of his right ear, describing the moment he heard a whizzing sound, followed by the impact and subsequent bleeding.
He concluded with a patriotic sentiment, saying, “I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA.”
