Social media lit up with a fierce debate after an edited image of Kamala Harris in a vintage McDonald’s uniform began circulating among Democrats and liberals online.
The photo, widely shared by Harris supporters, appeared in response to Donald Trump’s surprise shift at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania, where he claimed he’d “worked 15 minutes more” than Harris, whom he alleges never held a job at the chain.
The doctored image, showing Harris in a blue-and-white McDonald’s uniform, quickly went viral but was soon debunked.
Internet sleuths and X Community Note confirmed it was digitally altered, replacing the face of a deceased Canadian woman, Suzanne Bernier, a former McDonald’s swing manager from 1983, with that of the vice president and Democratic nominee.
McDonald’s itself released a statement clarifying it has no record of Harris in its employment history.
Some high-profile liberals eagerly promoted the image.
A post from The HipHop Report, a verified account on X, taunted Trump supporters with the caption, “Look what I found, Kamala Harris in a McDonald’s uniform. Hey MAGA cultists, explain this, I’ll wait.”
However, once the photo’s origins were revealed, the post drew significant backlash from Trump supporters and conservative figures.
Conservative commentator Andy Ngo shared, “Liberals on social media are sharing a viral faked image of Kamala Harris in a McDonald’s uniform to bolster the unsubstantiated claim that she worked at one in Alameda, California.”
Other Trump supporters on social media were quick to call out what they view as a pattern of dishonesty from Harris’s campaign.
Cillian, an X user, tweeted, “Democrats are posting a photo of ‘Kamala’ wearing a McDonald’s uniform to prove she worked there when she was younger. Democrats are Serial Liars.”
The doctored image has revived scrutiny around Harris’s past statements, which some have called into question.
She previously stirred controversy over claims about her heritage, including identifying as Black despite having Jamaican and Indian parents.
Harris has also faced accusations of embellishing her background, including statements that she listened to Tupac Shakur, whom she dubbed “the best rapper alive,” despite his rise in the 1990s.
This latest controversy recalls past allegations against President Joe Biden, who was accused of plagiarism and fabricating details of his life story during his 1987 presidential run.
Biden’s primary campaign was damaged after revelations that he plagiarized not only speeches but the personal narrative of UK Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock.
Harris has faced similar plagiarism accusations; during her 2007 congressional testimony, an analysis revealed that 80% of her statements closely mirrored those of a former colleague.
