‘Paano Na Sila?’ Makatizens in the Second District Urge Abby Binay to Run for Mayor in Taguig in 2025

Paano na ngayon sila?

In an emotional and heartfelt video statement posted on the city government’s official Facebook page, Makati Mayor Abigail Binay expressed her disappointment over the recent decision of the Supreme Court (SC) Third Division denying the Makati City government’s request to file a second motion for reconsideration regarding the Makati-Taguig territorial dispute.

Mayor Binay, on the verge of tears, lamented the fate of more than 300,000 Makatizens in 10 barangays who would now be part of the city of Taguig.

The SC ruling confirms that Parcels 3 and 4, Psu 2031, comprising Fort Bonifacio, including the so-called Inner Fort comprising Barangays Pembo, Comembo, Cembo, South Cembo, West Rembo, East Rembo, and Pitogo, are now confirmed to be part of the territory of the City of Taguig.

This would mean that some of Makati’s most coveted infrastructures and public establishments, such as the Ospital ng Makati and the University of Makati, would fall under the jurisdiction of Taguig.

Mayor Binay promised to respect the high court’s decision and vowed to continue serving the affected residents, despite the challenges it presents. She emphasized her dedication to the welfare of Makatizens, especially the thousands of students who may no longer have access to the quality education provided by Makati schools. Furthermore, she expressed concern for the health centers and Ospital ng Makati, which have been crucial in providing healthcare services to the residents.

Meanwhile, netizens in Makati and supporters of Mayor Abby Binay have enthusiastically urged her to consider running for the mayoral elections in Taguig in 2025. This proposition holds great interest and excitement, especially considering the latest total number of voters in Taguig, which exceeds 449,000.

Comparatively, the total number of voters in Makati’s second congressional district surpasses 248,000, excluding some other Makati barangays that remain part of the city. Notably, these 10 embattled barangays are renowned as Binay bailiwicks, indicating a high possibility of a Binay candidate securing the mayoral position in Taguig, provided the voters there continue to support the Binay dynasty.

In her speech, Mayor Binay stated, “Kahit na nakatali ang aking mga kamay bilang inyong mayora, handa akong ipagpatuloy ang paglilingkod sa inyo” (Even though my hands are tied as your mayor, I am ready to continue serving you). She reassured Makatizens that she and the city government would explore all possible avenues to ensure that the city’s services and benefits reach them, regardless of their new jurisdiction.

The Makati-Taguig territorial dispute has sparked discussions about the future of both cities and the impact on their residents. As the legal proceedings unfold, the fate of Makatizens in the affected barangays hangs in the balance. However, Mayor Binay’s unwavering dedication and promise to persevere provide a glimmer of hope for those affected.

The Supreme Court ruling has raised questions about the provision of essential services and benefits to the residents who will be transferred to Taguig. While Taguig claims to be ready to accommodate the affected individuals, Mayor Binay highlighted potential discrepancies in the benefits and services that Makati has provided over the years. She questioned the adequacy of Taguig’s offerings and emphasized the importance of Makati’s contributions to the development of the affected areas.

As Mayor Binay concluded her speech, she left a powerful message, stating, “Hindi kami susuko. Hindi ako susuko bilang inyong mayora” (We will not give up. I will not give up as your mayor). Her determination and commitment to the welfare of Makatizens reflect her unwavering spirit and dedication to serving the people.
