In the midst of the conflict between Israel and the militant group Hamas, a touching story has emerged about a Filipina nurse who displayed immense courage and selflessness.

Angelyn Peralta Aguirre, a dedicated caregiver, chose not to abandon her elderly patient during the chaos, ultimately giving her life to protect her charge.

Aguirre had been caring for an elderly patient named Nira at Kibbutz Kfar Gaza when Hamas terrorists launched a coordinated air, sea, and land assault on Israel. Faced with the sudden onslaught, Aguirre made a courageous decision. She sought refuge in a bomb shelter, taking her elderly patient with her.

In the midst of the turmoil, Aguirre sent frantic messages to her family in the Philippines.

She conveyed her fear and the dire situation in a voice message, saying, “Wadiya la ra. Natatakot ak (They are already here. I am afraid),” at 1:50 p.m., Philippine time. More anxious texts followed, but around 5 p.m., all communication ceased.

Aguirre’s family, like many others, hoped and prayed for her safety. They could not have foreseen the tragic outcome.

The Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem, Fleur Hassan-Nahoum, praised Aguirre’s heroic act.

In a social media post, she stated, “Despite having a chance to flee the Hamas terror attacks, Angelyn showed unbelievable humanity and loyalty by remaining by Nira’s side during the violence, resulting in both of them being brutally murdered by Hamas. Unimaginable honor in the face of evil.”

Esty Buzgan, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Israel Embassy in Manila, expressed condolences to Aguirre’s family and conveyed her sympathy for their loss. Aguirre’s sacrifice touched the hearts of many in Israel.

Aguirre was one of two overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who tragically lost their lives during the conflict near the Gaza border, prompting the declaration of war and a series of retaliatory airstrikes by Israeli forces.

The other victim was Paul Vincent Castelvi, a caregiver from Pampanga, who had reportedly been abducted by militants before his body was found. A potential third Filipino victim is currently being verified by the Department of Foreign Affairs.

In light of these devastating losses, President Marcos extended his condolences to the families of the two Filipinos who lost their lives in the conflict in Israel. He assured them of full government support, emphasizing the nation’s shared grief and the commitment to stand for peace.
